For the Golden Rain News
Merle McGee broke the hole-in-one jackpot at the Leisure World Men’s Golf Club tournament last week by acing the second hole to win $150. A new prize will be in place for the next match.
Closest to the pin on the eighth hole was Bill McKusky at 4 feet 4 inches. On the homebound round, Roger Addie stopped his shot two feet away to claim that prize.
Six prizes of $1 each went to circle-hole shot winners.
Young Lee was the shooter for the low over-the-field gross, 52 shots.
All scores are handicap results:
Lee also led the way onto the prize list for the first, low-handicap flight with his 47, low for the tournament.
Paul Cose, Rick Goyette, Sung E. Kim, Bill McKusky and Tom Soonthorn tied for second with 52s. They were followed by Fujio Norihiro, 53; and Merle McGee, 54.
Roger Addie and Mike Oh tied for first place in the second flight with matching 50s. They were followed by Byron Schweitzer and Bill Tushar, tied at 51; and Bob Barnum, 55.

Friday Golf Aug. 15 at Willowick was the usual: avoiding tricky sand traps.
Adding wet, heavy sand made the golfers examine their strategy of play.
A few wanted to eliminate some strokes. One former member of the group players said that it wasn’t a cowardly play to hit to the right of the trap at the eight hole.
Fuji Norihiro was the man of the day, carding a 69 to win the first flight. Bill McKusky was second at 76, followed by Merle McGee, 77 with help of the only bird in the flight. Jim Dickerson and Cose had a 78 and 79.
The second flight was short of players but fine performances were turned in by Lowell Goltra and Ed Dragan.
No one scored on the closest-to-the pin holes so a carryover is planned at Baker Sept. 22.
