TRAVEL Silver Fox Classic car club members visited Nash museum by Derek Hogarth LW contributor
The Silver Fox Classic Car Club of Leisure World visited the “Pit Stop” on June 17.
The Silver Fox Classic Car Club is for all who love vintage cars. It’s not necessary to own such a car, only to have an interest in them. The club meets on the second Monday of the month, Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 6 p.m.
Members have regular outings each month to local car museums, vintage airplane museums, etc.
The Nash Metropolitan “Pit Stop” museum is a combination, auto parts warehouse and museum.
Jimmy and Eve Valentine officially founded Metropolitan Pit Stop in 1975. Jimmy died in 2008, now his daughter is the owner.
The Metropolitan Pit Stop has been featured in many magazine and newspaper articles. It has also been featured on television, with coverage on CNN, NBC and the program “Wild About Wheels,” episode No. 61.
The North Hollywood facility on Laurel Canyon Boulevard represents a perfect shrine to the car culture. Under a glitter-flecked stucco ceiling, there’s a vintage bumper car and a couch in fiberglass, the mold taken from the back end of a Metropolitan — complete with flashing brake lights.
On display are eight Metropolitans in the museum, including the Astra-Gnome, a car of the future from 1955, with a Jetson-styled bubble hatch. It was made for the 1956 New York International Auto Show, another special is the pre-production wagon, this is the only one made.
Because Metropolitan parts were hard to find, Jimmy started stockpiling them, eventually, he began having parts manufactured, and now the Pit Stop serves Metropolitan owners worldwide.
For information, call President Derek Hogarth, 310-7588.
