Travel Hawaiian Islands
Tubing was leisurely shore excursion on Kauai
Sandra deDubovay and Joe DiDonato recently took a 15-day cruise aboard the Princess Star to the Hawaiian Islands. They enjoy this so much, this was their third time in five years. They sailed 5,950 statute miles across the Pacific Ocean and back.
While visiting Kauai, Sandra booked the shore excursion, Tubing the Hanamaulu Ditch System. Out of 2,900 passengers, only 26 adventurous ones signed up. Sandra’s group consisted of nine people.
They began the 2-1/2 mile tubing expedition by putting on a helmet with a head lamp, gloves and water socks for safety. They were helped into individual largish tubes to start cruising down this amazing water ditch.
This spectacular engineering feat, built circa 1912, was constructed as an irrigation ditch, with backbreaking labor. The waterway consists of open ditches, five tunnels and flumes.
Sandra thought it was a blast floating leisurely down the ditch with lush natural flora all around.
On the first day of the cruise Sandra and Joe heard “Hello Leisure World.”
It’s a small world... LWers Walter “Dutch” Van Kerkoven and his wife were on the same cruise. They know each other from the LW Dixieland Band Club. Dutch is the banjo player.
Dutch participated in the ship’s ukulele classes. The ship had a Hawaiian show featuring all the ukulele players on stage, and Dutch was right there in the middle of the front row.

Pasadena
LWers take advantage of free admission to art museum
by Leila Claudio

Entry into the Norton Simon museum in Pasadena is free on the first Friday of the month, from 6-9 p.m.  The usual cost is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors, and students 18 and under are free.
Gui Baker and Leila Claudio would be remiss in not taking the opportunity to go to Leila’s favorite museum for free.
The museum has an extensive collection of Renaissance, Baroque, Impressionist, modern and contemporary art, plus a world- renowned exhibit of Southeast Asian and Indian art.
Gui loves museums in general, but what imprinted in her memory was “The Mulberry Tree” by Van Gogh. The leaves seemed to be popping right at her giving it a 3-D effect.  She also kept returning to the “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother,” with her Madonna-like quality and kind, serene face.
Leila went chiefly for the impressionist art. To her, the masters painted their subjects with vitality that seems to be missing a bit from the other periods, for example Toulouse-Lautrec’s “Rider on a White Horse.” “You can actually feel the air rushing past as she canters around the arena in preparation for doing her acrobatic tricks in the circus show,” she says. “Or the one by Degas of a woman at her toilette. Who doesn’t get a vicarious pleasure at seeing something so ordinary like brushing her hair, the same thing we could be doing in the present?  Can anyone imagine the scent of her perfume, the powder in her hair, the tightening of her stays as she pours her body into her costume.”
What about Monet’s “Artist’s Garden at Vetheuil,” the exuberance of his glorious sunflowers spilling down the slopes of the staircase from his house. Such a riot of color that if a person was really out in the sunshine, he/she could imagine being blinded by the light.
The ladies ambled outside in the garden after seeing the rest of the museum’s offerings, but before they knew it, it was closing time. Three hours didn’t seem long enough, and then it was time to drive back home
