SOCIAL 17 CLUB

Social 17 will escort its final trip, $75, to see The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies’ “The Last Hurrah!” on Thursday, April 10. The Follies will close May 18, after 23 seasons.

The farewell season is a greatest hits show, featuring the best dance production numbers from past years.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Darlene Love will be the featured guest star. Darlene is best known for her early 1960s pop hits “He’s a Rebel” and “He’s Sure the Boy that I Love.”

Frank Oliver will provide variety acts. The veteran of Broadway, Las Vegas and TV, including “America’s Got Talent,” is a Follies first-timer. His show will feature comedy with juggling, magic and more.

The Broadway-caliber musical revue has been a fixture at the Plaza Theatre in Downtown Palm Springs since 1992, where it gained a worldwide reputation for glamour and excitement.

The performers range in age from 56 to 86. The line of “Long- Legged Lovelies” and “Follies Gentlemen” dance and sing with a zest that younger folks envy.

Join ‘Last Hurrah’ at Follies troupe entertains over three million people with packed houses at every performance, up to 10 shows a week, seven months a year.

The show is sewn together by Follies Man Riff Markowitz, with his unique blend of cutting edge satire and Old World savoir faire.

At 15, Riff ran away from home and joined the circus as a tramp clown, which led to career as a performer, writer, director and producer. He retired at age 50 only to discover that retirement was not for him.

The City of Palm Springs purchased the Plaza Theater with no ideas of what to do with it. It was Riff who came up with the follies concept to keep the spirit of the 40s, 50s, and 60s music, comedy and dance alive.

The cost of the trip includes motorcoach transportation, admission to the show and the driver’s gratuity.

There is time before the show for lunch on-your-own at one of the many restaurants in the area and shopping at boutiques.

For tickets and more information, call David Zimmerman, 594-7457, or Kathy Gassman, 596-4014.
