Galapagos

Special delivery ‘Island Mail’ arrived quickly in LW

One of the many highlights of our fabulous Celebrity Galapagos Island Cruise was a visit to the Island Post Office. Here for centuries the whalers, buccaneers and pirates left letters and messages for the family members and friends they left behind.

Back then, as now, the chance of that message reaching its final destination was highly remote. It would be delivered only if the traveler was going to that specific city or town. It could be months, years ... or never delivered.

The cruise ships that visit the Galapagos have kept the tradition alive by encouraging passengers to write a post card and put it into the Island Mail Box.

Imagine our utter shock when we received a phone call, just one week after our Galapagos adventure, that someone wanted to come to our house to deliver the “mail!”

We live in a senior community called “Leisure World” in the small seaside city of Seal Beach, Calif.

We made arrangements to meet at our house and the “mailman” was none other than Heidi Cortese, who’s father just happened to build the first senior community in the United States in Seal Beach, Calif., called ... “Leisure World” over 50 years ago.

Who would have thought? We had a great visit and shared many pictures and fond memories.
