Silver Fox

LWers share their classic cars

by Derek Hogarth

LW contributor

The Silver Fox Classic Car Club is for all who love vintage cars, it’s not necessary to own such a car, but only to have an interest in them. The club meets on the second Monday of the month, Clubhouse 3, Room 2, at 6 p.m.

Members have regular outings each month to local car museums, vintage airplane museums, etc.

Call President Derek Hogarth, 310-7588, for information about the club.

1947 Willy’s Jeep

Steve Housden has owned his Jeep for about three years. It had been in a garage for 25 years.

He trailered the jeep home and then spent many hours of sanding, painting, installing new seats and new tires, then he had a fun driving machine.

John North Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of Standard Wheel Company in 1908. In 1912 he renamed the Willy’s Overland Division Willy’s-Overland Motor Company.

In 1940 working from a Bantam Car Company design, Willy’s contracted to build military Jeeps for the war and produced about 360,000 vehicles by 1945.

In 1945 Willy’s began the production of the Civilian Jeep (CJ) line with the introduction of the CJ2A model.

The CJ2A has a four-cylinder gas engine, three-speed manual transmission, an over and under, and a four-wheel drive. This vehicle is very agile, durable and fun to drive.

1975 Ford F150 Camper Special

The sixth generation Ford F-Series is a line of pickup trucks and medium-duty commercial trucks produced by Ford Motor Company from 1973-1979. These are the last generation of trucks to use the F-Series chassis introduced in 1965.

After a decade as a compact SUV, the Bronco was redesigned as a shortened version of the F-Series. This generation of F-Series also marks the introduction of the F-150, today the most popular model.

This generation is noted for the durability of the body panels as Ford used extensive amounts of galvanized sheet metal to fight corrosion. In 1976, the F-Series became the best-selling truck in America, a position it has continued to hold ever since.

Darwin Gardner has owned his vehicle for about a year and is the third owner. Darwin has had the truck painted, new upholstery, new tires and has replaced the exhaust system. The vehicle has about 93,000 miles and is still going strong.
