Ladies Golf

The Ladies Golf Club will continue activity through the holidays with a special team tournament Dec. 31.

The Ace of the Year low net and low gross tournament will be held Jan. 14. Only Ace of the Month winners are eligible.

The club’s first meeting of 2014 is Jan. 6.

Play in the Dec. 17 tournament was low net and putts. Forty-seven ladies participated.

Fifty-nine members of the Cribbage met Dec. 17, to deal and start the games.

Guests were Judy Carter-Johnson and Earl Nernberg, nephew of Alma Zamzow. Both were at the tables ready to play. 

The room was decorated with ferns and holiday candles by Patti Smith and Pat Swope.

Scott Boeger and Patti Smith had perfect 847 games to tie for first place and add stars to their badges. Patti now has five and Scott three.

Gene Smith was second with an 837, followed by Helyn Edwards, 834; and Fred Claveau, 831.

A potluck luncheon was served under the direction of Margaret Smith with helpers. 

The club meets at noon, Tuesdays, in Clubhouse 1. Members play seven games at tables of four. They change tables as they win.

There are always enough tables for everyone and games end at approximately 3:30.

To learn the game or just brush up, call Patti Smith, president, at 242-4674. She will have a teacher available.

The club welcomes all LW residents. They can play the first three games before joining.

Play is scheduled on Dec.31.

Kurt Bourhenne, a longtime Leisure World resident and poker player,won the Leisure World Series of Poker Dec. 14 at Hawaiian Gardens Casino.

Kurt won with an ace-high flush, beating runner-up Jo Ann Ivy. Kurt is the president of Mutual 14. Jo Ann is a club guest and a friend of club founder George Elias.

Club member Sandy Geffner was third, followed by Bob Looney, Shannon Fiorica, Sunshine Daye, Muradiye Mongeon, Ralph Provow, Lucy Starkey and Bette Sargent.

This year there was a second final table at the tournament with paid prizes. Winners were Susan Dodson, followed by Sylvia Hoptman, Monica Lanz, Jim Barnett, Cecile Langevin, Traci Goldberg, Jane Legus, Yuki Mancebo, Carole Damoci and Eileen Woods.

The tournament attracted 106 players. Breakfast started at 7:30 a.m., and cards were in the air at 9.

Casino host Cavin Quintanilla provided the players with a private playing area, professional dealers and breakfast buffet.

The club thanks the casino for hosting the club at these special events twice a year. And thanks to Mr. Quintanilla, who personally ensures that everything runs smoothly for the players.

Additional thanks to Cleo Looney, club secretary, who coordinated the event; Susan Dodson club president; Carole Damoci, vice president; and Grace Buster, treasurer; for assisting with name tags and seating assignments.

The tournament was a holiday treat and fun way to end the year.

Monday Golf

Fantastic weather was in store for the Monday Golf Group Dec. 16, on the last trip of the year to Willowick.

Ron Maddox posted a great 66, low round of the day, to win the B flight. Bob Looney and Rich Miller had matching 72s for second. Rich had low putts, 31.

Tied for fourth were Lowell Goltra and Mike Looney, followed by Marv Ballard. Marv was closest to the pin on the 12th hole.

Bill McKusky won the first flight with an even par 71 ahead of Don McLane, who had the fewest putts, 29. Rounding out the field were Larry Hillhouse, Merle McGee and Jim Dickerson, all of whom had birdies.

There will be a carryover on birdies in the second flight and closest to the pin on the fourth hole.

The group will be idle until Jan. 6 at Meadowlark.

The Misfits took over first place in the Leisure World Bowling League standings by two games after a split with Just Lucky. 

Crazy Eights swept Very Striking, dropping the losing team to second place. CE had high team game of 884 and high series, 2,513. 

Kaye Montoya bowled a season high 191, 190 and 530 series and teammate Arnold Bakker had a 221.

  Grace Lesher picked up a big split, teaming with Bill Lesher to help We R The 1’s win three games.

Irene Perkins bowled 167 and 459 to lead It’s a JJIP to three wins.

Hit or Miss hit for three even though Ned Sprow of Kegler’s Four had a 217.

LWWW also won three games as Frank Tripoli flirted with a 200 by rolling 191, 196 and 192 for a 579. Tony Dodero added games of 186 and 192.

There will be no bowling until Jan. 6.
